The year is 1974. You spotted the flyers stapled to telephone poles and pasted on construction walls near the arty repertory cinemas of San Francisco and Los Angeles. As a fan of foreign horror and art house movies, you couldn’t pass up the chance to see a famous European director’s new mystery film for free.

You called the number on one of the tear-off tabs and answered a few trivia questions correctly to score a coveted gold ticket. After scribbling down the details, you made your way by bus, car, or hitching a ride (it’s 1970s California, after all) to the designated meetup spot.

The phone instructions were simple: show up at a local truck stop off highway 101 in King City, California and catch the charter bus waiting in the parking lot. From there, you’ll be whisked away to a secret location for an unforgettable night of cinema. There will be free concessions, cool promotional swag, and, best of all, a chance to be among the first people anywhere to see the director’s mysterious new film.

*Note: this is the second one-shot scenario in my game anthology, “The Midnight Specials,” which focuses on strange happenings on the western United States’ back roads in the 1970s. The first one-shot (run last year at DoW) was Red Line Fever.*
